A philanthropic effort in Katsina State, Nigeria, has committed over N87.5 million to provide free surgical interventions for patients suffering from hernia and hydrocele. According to Hussaini Kabir, a member of the Mangal Foundation’s Board of Trustees, the initiative has been ongoing since 2013, with quarterly interventions aimed at alleviating the financial burden of healthcare for vulnerable individuals.
During a recent screening exercise at the Katsina General Hospital, Kabir revealed that the foundation has supported a significant number of patients. In the first quarter, approximately 400 patients received treatment at a cost of N28 million; in the second quarter, 500 patients were treated for N29.5 million. For the current quarter, more than 900 patients have registered, with an expected expenditure of at least N30 million.
The Mangal Foundation’s efforts have benefited not only residents of Katsina metropolis but also rural communities and neighboring states. Kabir emphasized that the initiative reflects the foundation’s commitment to addressing healthcare challenges in underserved areas and called on other organizations and philanthropists to support similar humanitarian efforts, highlighting the need for collective action to improve health outcomes.
Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the program, urging the government, private organizations, and wealthy individuals to emulate such gestures. One beneficiary, Malam Adamu Abubakar, shared his experience of living with a hernia for an extended period, unable to afford surgery due to economic hardship. The free surgical intervention has brought relief to many, and the foundation’s continued quarterly interventions are expected to make a significant impact in the region.
The Mangal Foundation’s commitment to providing free surgeries and medical treatment represents a substantial step toward meeting the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations. As the foundation maintains its quarterly interventions, it is essential for other stakeholders to support similar initiatives, ensuring collective efforts improve healthcare outcomes in underserved communities. With these philanthropic endeavors, many individuals will receive the medical attention they need, and the broader community will benefit from the positive impact.
