The Nigerian government has secured the release of 100 schoolchildren who were abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in the Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State. The kidnapping took place on 21 November 2025, when gunmen on motorbikes stormed the school’s dormitories for three hours, beginning at 2 a.m. A total of 315 people were taken: 303 students and 12 teachers.
In the immediate aftermath, security forces and local hunters searched nearby forests for the captives. Fifty pupils managed to escape and were reunited with their families, but 265 people—253 children and all 12 teachers—remained in captivity. The recent release of 100 schoolchildren marks a significant development in a case that has highlighted the security challenges facing schools in the region.
The incident is one of several recent school abductions in Nigeria, underscoring the need for stronger protection of educational institutions, especially in rural areas where security presence is limited.
