The Ministry of the Interior in Ghana has launched an investigation into alleged assassination attempts on Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng and a claim of police brutality against a staff member of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. According to a statement from the ministry, Samuel Appiah Darko, the Director of Strategy, Research and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, disclosed on a television program that Mr. Agyebeng had survived two assassination attempts while carrying out his duties.

Preliminary findings indicate that the alleged attempts occurred before this year, and there is no record of such threats at any police station or state security agency. The Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mohammed‑Mubarak, has directed a full‑scale investigation into the claims, emphasizing that crimes do not expire. The ministry is also probing Mr. Appiah Darko’s allegation that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.

The investigations aim to verify the authenticity of these claims and determine the necessary actions to be taken. The Ministry of Interior has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Ghanaians, ensuring they can conduct lawful activities without fear for their safety. The allegations have significant implications for the government’s anti‑corruption efforts, which have intensified since taking office. The Special Prosecutor’s office plays a crucial role in holding public officials accountable, and any threats to its personnel can undermine these efforts.

The ministry’s inquiry will provide clarity on the matter and help maintain public trust in the government’s commitment to fighting corruption. It will update the public on the outcome of the investigations and the actions taken. The incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and security of personnel in accountability institutions, which is essential for their effective functioning. This investigation is a step toward addressing those concerns and promoting a safe, secure environment for all Ghanaians.
