President‑Elect Bola Tinubu received his Certificate of Return, an event captured in a photograph of the ceremony.
A coalition of traditional rulers from the South West and Yoruba‑speaking areas of the North Central geopolitical zones, organized under the Yoruba Obas Forum, has called on Tinubu to assign constitutional roles to royal fathers. The request was included in a congratulatory message to the president‑elect following his victory in the recent presidential election.
The message was co‑signed by the forum’s administrator, the Elerinmo of Erinmo, Oba Michael Ajayi; the Molokun of Atijere, Oba Samuel Adeoye, who also serves as the forum’s president; and its general secretary, the Olukotun of Ikotun‑Ile, Oba Abdulrasaq Abioye.
In addition to the request, the monarchs urged Tinubu to demonstrate magnanimity in victory by forming a government of national unity. They appealed to the losing presidential candidates to support Tinubu for the swift development of the country.
The statement read, in part:
“We call on those who lost in the elections to accept the outcome in good faith, put any differences aside and join hands with the winners for the overall benefit of the country.
We commend President Buhari and the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, for their steadfastness in ensuring a fairly good election where many lost their strongholds. Democracy is a journey, not a destination.
We, Yoruba Obas, also call on the president‑elect to consider giving constitutional roles to traditional rulers in the country, which we believe would bring the dividends of democracy closer to rural areas and help curb insecurity, as we are the Chief Security Officers of our respective domains.”
