Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation into the deaths of at least nine women protesters in Lamorde Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The human‑rights group attributes the fatalities to the military’s alleged excessive and unlawful use of force, stating that live ammunition was fired at demonstrators without warning, killing several women and injuring others. Amnesty condemned the incident as horrific and said the security forces’ handling of civilian protests is unacceptable.
The violence is linked to a long‑standing ethnic dispute between the Bachama and Chobo communities, which originally stemmed from land disagreements and a stolen motorcycle. Amnesty criticized the government’s response to the communal violence as inadequate, slow and ineffective. Even when security agencies have intervened, their actions have often resulted in further casualties and destruction rather than restoring peace.
The organization expressed concern that the failure to investigate such human‑rights violations undermines the value of human life in Nigeria. In the specific incident on 8 December 2025 in Lamorde, the use of excessive force by security agencies led to additional deaths and damage. Amnesty emphasized the need for a prompt, transparent investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar events in the future.
