Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recent defection to the Accord Party, calling the move “good riddance.” In a statement, APC chairman Tajudeen Lawal said Adeleke’s switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was expected and would not affect his prospects in the 2026 governorship election. The party argued that residents have lost confidence in Adeleke’s administration, which it described as marked by deceit and subterfuge, and accused him of abandoning the PDP and its elected members for personal reasons rather than addressing internal party crises.

The APC questioned the significance of the defection, asserting that it does not represent a genuine political realignment. It noted that Adeleke had been rejected by other parties before joining the Accord Party, which the APC characterises as lacking national influence, with no governors or notable recognition in the country. The Osun APC welcomed the move, saying it will make it easier to defeat him in the upcoming election, and expressed confidence in its preparation and commitment to the electoral process, citing Adeleke’s poor performance in office as a reason for his likely defeat.

Lawal added that Adeleke’s three‑year tenure failed to meet the state’s developmental needs and that residents are eager for a change in leadership. Adeleke announced his defection to the Accord Party on Tuesday, confirming his intention to seek re‑election in 2026 after weeks of consultation with stakeholders and opinion leaders. The APC’s response underscores the political tensions in Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship race, with the party poised to challenge Adeleke’s re‑election bid. As the election approaches, the Osun APC’s confidence in its preparations and the perceived weaknesses of Adeleke’s administration may significantly shape the state’s political landscape.
