PDP Won’t Miss Defected Governor Fubara

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State has downplayed the impact of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the party’s Vice Chairman, Central, Mr. Hakeem Olalemi, Fubara’s decision to leave the PDP was a personal choice driven by his quest for political protection.

Olalemi stated that everyone has the right to belong to the party of their choice, and Fubara’s move was not connected to internal issues within the PDP. He attributed the party’s current challenges to the refusal of some individuals to follow due process and the party’s constitution. The PDP chieftain expressed confidence that the party would soon stabilize and return to the path of progress.

Fubara’s defection was announced at a stakeholders meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The governor cited his desire to support President Bola Tinubu as the reason for his decision, stating that he would not have remained in office without Tinubu’s support. Olalemi dismissed concerns that Fubara’s departure would be felt, noting that the governor had not been active in party affairs.

The PDP in Lagos State wishes Fubara well in his new political journey, but Olalemi emphasized that the party will not miss him. The situation in Rivers State, which led to Fubara’s defection, predates the current challenges facing the PDP at the national level. The party’s leadership is focused on addressing its internal issues and moving forward.

The defection of high-profile politicians is not uncommon in Nigerian politics, and the PDP has experienced its share of losses in recent times. However, the party remains committed to its ideals and is working to reposition itself for future elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the PDP is expected to reassess its strategies and strengthen its structures to remain competitive.

In the meantime, Fubara’s decision to join the APC is seen as a significant development in the political dynamics of Rivers State. The governor’s move may have implications for the state’s political configuration, and it remains to be seen how his defection will affect the balance of power in the region.
