The Abia State Government announced that the winners of the Abia State Secondary School Unity Games will receive the Obisia Nwankpa medal, honoring the late Olympian. This information was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, during a burial ceremony held at the Umuahia Township Stadium. The ceremony, organized by the state government, paid tribute to Obisie Nwankpa, a renowned boxer who died at the age of 75.
Representing the Commissioner, Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Raymond Ukwa, said the medal reflects Nwankpa’s lifelong commitment to serving his state and country. Through this initiative, Nwankpa’s legacy will endure in Abia schools, the sports development system, and the aspirations of young Abians who strive for excellence. The Commissioner also extended condolences to Nwankpa’s family on behalf of the government, acknowledging him as a member of the generation that defined sports in Nigeria.
Obisie Nwankpa enjoyed a distinguished boxing career, winning 23 of 29 fights, including 16 knockouts. He earned a gold medal at the 1973 All‑African Games in Lagos, another gold at the Commonwealth Games, and represented Nigeria as a light‑welterweight boxer at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, described Nwankpa as a warrior who excelled in his chosen field, noting that his achievements have left a lasting impact on the sports community and will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
Nwankpa was laid to rest on Friday in Okpulukwu Umuosu, Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA. The state’s tribute serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring sports legends who have made significant contributions to their communities and the nation.
