A recent attack in Plateau State, Nigeria, has left four young children dead, allegedly at the hands of suspected Fulani herdsmen. The killings occurred in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where the herders are believed to have launched a reprisal after their cows were rustled.
Security expert Zagazola Makama said the attack took place on Thursday, less than 48 hours after local militias carried out coordinated assaults on pastoral communities in Barkin Ladi, Jos East, and Riyom Local Government Areas. In those incidents, at least 168 cattle were stolen and several others poisoned. Makama reported that on Wednesday evening 137 cattle were taken around the Nding community in Fan District, while another 34 were stolen from the Kukukah community in Jos East.
The victims have been identified as Precious Joshuah, 17; Isaac Joshuah, 9; Mary Joshuah, 7; and Eve Sambo, 3. A community leader in Foron District, who wished to remain anonymous, said the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, amid heightened tension following the cattle‑rustling episodes. The leader warned that reprisals were imminent if no action was taken, and those fears have now been realized.
Troops and other security operatives have been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation and restore calm. The community leader called on the state government and security agencies to intervene urgently, arrest perpetrators on all sides, and address the underlying causes of the recurring violence. This incident is the latest in a series of clashes between herders and local communities in the region, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property. The Plateau State government and security agencies now face the challenge of finding a lasting solution to a conflict fueled by competing claims to land and resources.
