Edo 2026 budget hits N939bn for growth and development

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has presented the 2026 budget estimate to the State House of Assembly, totaling N939.85 billion. The budget, tagged “Budget of Hope and Growth,” aims to consolidate on the gains recorded in the governor’s first year in office and restore the hope of Edo people in governance.

The proposed budget is over N140.03 billion higher than the 2025 budget of N799.82 billion. A significant portion of the budget, N637 billion, representing 68%, is allocated to capital expenditure, while N302 billion, representing 32%, is for recurrent expenditure. The governor explained that the budget focuses on key areas such as security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, job creation, and healthcare.

According to Governor Okpebholo, the budget will be funded through various sources, including Internally Generated Revenue of N160 billion, Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) of N480 billion, and Public-Private Partnerships of N146 billion. The governor assured that his administration will not impose unnecessary financial pressure on citizens, instead strengthening systems and blocking leakages to ensure efficient use of resources.

The sectoral breakdown of the budget allocation indicates that the economic sector has the largest share of N614.2 billion, followed by the administration sector with N157.7 billion, and the social sector with N148.9 billion. The budget is built on the SHINE Agenda of the government, which has five pillars: Security, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Resources/Agriculture, and Education.

The governor emphasized that the vision of the 2026 budget is to bring about prosperity and a united Edo State where every citizen has hope and every community feels the impact of governance. With this budget, the state government aims to expand its reach and deliver tangible development to its people. The proposed budget is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s development, and its implementation will be closely monitored by stakeholders.
