Senate okays appointments of new REC, NERC commissioners

The Nigerian Senate has approved the appointment of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Abia State on the Independent National Electoral Commission. The Senate also confirmed Aisha Kanti Bello and Dr. Animashaun Fouad Olayinka as commissioners of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission. Bello’s appointment extends her current term, while Olayinka joins the commission as a new member.

These confirmations followed reports from two Senate committees: the Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong, and the Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. Both chairmen affirmed that the nominees satisfied all constitutional and professional requirements for their respective positions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the committees and the chamber for their efficient work. He congratulated the newly confirmed electoral commissioner, wishing him success and urging fairness and equity in promoting democracy and ensuring justice. Akpabio also commended President Bola Tinubu for submitting a list of qualified nominees, describing them as ideal candidates for their roles. He emphasized the importance of these appointments, expressing hope that the nominees will act with wisdom and justice for all Nigerian voters, not just politicians, and acknowledged the Committee on Power for its diligent review.

The approval of these appointments fills key positions in the electoral and energy regulatory bodies, which are crucial to Nigeria’s democratic process and energy sector. The swift confirmation reflects the Senate’s commitment to adequately staffing these institutions so they can carry out their duties effectively. With these appointments, attention now turns to the nominees as they assume their responsibilities and aim to contribute positively to Nigeria’s democratic development and energy regulation.
