MetaX, a Chinese company that specializes in high‑end chips for artificial‑intelligence systems, saw its Shanghai debut shares surge more than 750 %. The initial public offering raised $585.8 million, with shares priced at 104.66 yuan ($14.86) before climbing to 895.00 yuan and closing at 730.34 yuan. The dramatic rise reflects hopes that China could challenge U.S.‑based Nvidia, the current dominant player in the GPU market.

The rally follows a similar surge less than two weeks earlier, when another Chinese chipmaker, Moore Threads, jumped 425 % after a $1.1 billion IPO. Both firms produce advanced graphics‑processing units that are essential for running and training AI tools. Nvidia presently dominates the GPU sector, benefiting from strong global demand and optimism about AI. Analysts say investors are attracted by the prospect that China’s chip industry could eventually rival the United States.

Beijing is actively encouraging the use of domestically produced chips, especially after Washington imposed export restrictions on high‑end Nvidia models in 2022 over national‑security concerns. Those restrictions were intended to prevent the Chinese military from gaining a technological edge. However, a recent agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will permit Nvidia to export its advanced H200 chips to China, albeit with limitations.

According to Rui Ma, founder of the Tech Buzz China newsletter, the export curbs have created a protected high‑end segment for chips in China, bolstered by policy support and deeper capital pools. This environment has favored domestic GPU and AI‑accelerator companies, drawing significant investor interest to firms such as Moore Threads, Cambricon, MetaX, Biren and Enflame. The strong gains of MetaX and Moore Threads underscore the growing enthusiasm for China’s chip sector and its potential to challenge U.S. dominance.

As competition between China and the United States intensifies in the AI arena, the development of homegrown chips will remain a priority for Beijing. With the recent agreement allowing limited Nvidia exports, the industry is poised for further developments in the coming months.
