Benue killings: If government fails, we’ll defend ourselves – Senator Abba Moro

Senator Abba Moro, who represents Benue South and leads the Senate minority, reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he has no intention of leaving. He made the declaration during a consultative session with the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), chaired by Kabiru Turaki. Although the PDP has suffered a series of defections since the beginning of the year, Moro stressed that he and other committed members will not abandon the party under pressure or political intimidation. He described the PDP as the only credible platform for democratic governance in Nigeria and urged the newly elected NWC to work with party leaders to promote cohesion and unity.

Moro emphasized that many party members are not driven by personal gain or short‑term political interests, stating, “We are in PDP to stay. We are not in PDP for the sake of using the platform to win elections, and certainly not fixated on the 2027 elections.” He called on the NWC to focus on salvaging the situation after the national convention. In response, Turaki assured that the party is repositioning itself to protect the country from anti‑democratic forces and to preserve multiparty democracy. He praised Moro and other PDP senators for their principled stance, calling them “pillars of the party,” and stressed that the 2027 general elections are about the Nigerian people, not defections.

Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, also lauded the successful national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, and pledged the BoT’s support for the Turaki‑led NWC. He noted that the party appears to be repositioning itself, with strengthened structures and restored confidence across the federation. Wabara highlighted the need for unity and reconciliation, urging the party to focus on healing.

These efforts to reposition the PDP and foster unity come at a critical moment as the party seeks to regain its footing in Nigerian politics. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, presenting a united front and attracting voters will be crucial to the party’s success. Moving forward, it will be essential for leaders such as Moro, Turaki, and Wabara to continue working toward cohesion and democratic governance.
