Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani welcomed the release of 11 Nigerian Air Force personnel who had been detained in Burkina Faso. The servicemen and a Nigerian Air Force aircraft were freed after diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government, following a shuttle mission by the country’s foreign affairs minister to the region.
Sani praised the outcome on social media, calling it a positive development and stressing the importance of African nations maintaining good relations with one another rather than allowing external forces to foment conflict. He warned that neocolonialists and imperialists often seek to exploit Africa’s resources, and that internal disputes make such exploitation easier.
Burkina Faso has been under military rule since the 2022 coup led by Ibrahim Traoré, and its relationship with Nigeria has historically been complex despite shared cultural ties. The release of the Nigerian personnel is seen as a significant step toward improving bilateral relations. Sani’s comments underscore the need for African countries to prioritize their own interests and partnerships, free from outside influence.
The successful diplomatic intervention by the Nigerian government is expected to enhance ties between Nigeria and Burkina Faso and could pave the way for greater cooperation. As the situation evolves, further steps may be taken to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
