Nigerian Airforce personnel freed from Burkina Faso detention

A former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani, has welcomed the release of 11 Nigerian Air Force personnel who were being held in Burkina Faso. The personnel, along with a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, were freed after diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government.

The development comes after the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister’s diplomatic shuttle to the region. Sani took to social media to express his commendation for the release, stating that it was a positive outcome. He emphasized the importance of African countries maintaining good relations with each other, rather than allowing external influences to create conflict.

Burkina Faso has been under military rule since a coup led by Ibrahim Traore in 2022. The West African nation has had a complex relationship with Nigeria, with both countries having historical and cultural ties. The release of the Nigerian Air Force personnel is seen as a significant step towards improving relations between the two countries.

Sani’s comments highlight the need for African nations to prioritize their own interests and relationships, rather than being swayed by external powers. He noted that neocolonialists and imperialists often seek to exploit Africa’s resources, and that internal conflicts can make it easier for them to do so.

The Nigerian government’s diplomatic efforts have borne fruit, with the release of the personnel and aircraft. This development is expected to improve relations between Nigeria and Burkina Faso, and potentially pave the way for greater cooperation between the two nations. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what further steps will be taken to strengthen ties between the two countries.
