Complaint targets French president’s wife over ‘stupid b***hes’ remark — RT World News

French First Lady Brigitte Macron is facing a legal complaint after she referred to feminist protesters as “stupid bitches” in a private conversation at a Paris theatre. The incident occurred earlier this month when a group of feminist activists disrupted a show by actor‑comedian Ary Abittan, who had previously been accused of rape. Although the case against Abittan was dropped for lack of evidence, the activists protested his performance, prompting Macron’s remarks.

A video clip of the conversation—since deleted—shows Macron trying to calm Abittan’s nerves after the disruption. Her choice of words, however, has sparked widespread criticism from politicians, activists, and figures in the film industry. Macron has apologized, describing the comments as “private.” A coalition of feminist associations has filed a complaint against her for public insult, arguing that the remarks constitute an attack on 343 women and their organisations and undermine the feminist movement.

The French presidency has defended Macron, saying she was criticizing the radical methods used by the protesters. Under French law, the president’s spouse does not enjoy legal immunity, but the statutes on public insult apply only to statements made publicly. It remains unclear whether Macron’s privately spoken comments, later leaked online, meet that threshold. If found guilty, she could face a modest fine for a lesser offense.

The episode has ignited a broader debate about digital harassment and the treatment of public figures. Macron has previously been the target of online conspiracy theories falsely claiming she is transgender, a rumor that led to a court‑ordered fine for its originators. The Hysterical Knitters, a feminist group, noted that feminist organisations had supported Macron in the past because of the relentless harassment she endured. The complaint against her highlights the challenge of balancing free speech with respect for public figures and the need to protect individuals from harassment and insult. As the case proceeds, the context and implications of Macron’s comments, as well as the wider issues of online harassment and the treatment of feminist activists, will require careful consideration.
