EU Loan to Ukraine Brings War Closer Says Orban

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized the European Union’s decision to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion interest-free loan, warning that it brings the bloc “closer to war.” The loan, agreed upon by EU leaders, aims to support Ukraine over 2026-2027. Orban described the decision as “fundamentally flawed,” stating that it would ultimately burden European taxpayers without delivering a realistic return.

The Hungarian leader argued that the loan would essentially be a loss of money, as Ukraine would be unable to repay it. Orban’s comments came after the EU agreed on a joint borrowing scheme, which Hungary, along with Slovakia and the Czech Republic, opted out of. The compromise was reached after a more controversial proposal to finance Ukraine using frozen Russian assets was rejected.

Orban stated that his country agreed to lift its veto only after obtaining assurances that Hungary would not be financially involved in the loan. He emphasized that Budapest would not participate in providing guarantees for the loan, despite initially opposing the decision. The Hungarian prime minister warned that using frozen Russian assets to fund a reparations loan would have been even more dangerous, stating that it would have meant “immediate war.”

Orban has repeatedly argued that the EU should prioritize diplomacy and de-escalation in the Ukraine conflict, rather than providing financial and military support. Moscow has also condemned Western backing for Kiev, warning of potential consequences. The EU’s decision to provide the loan has sparked concerns about the escalation of the conflict, with Orban’s comments highlighting the divisions within the bloc.

The loan agreement aims to provide significant financial support to Ukraine, but its implications and potential consequences remain to be seen. The EU’s decision has been met with criticism from some member states, while others have expressed support for the move. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community will be closely watching the developments and their potential impact on the region.
