Rubio cracks Putin jokes with journalists (VIDEO) — RT World News

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently joked that Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to upstage him by holding his annual end‑of‑year press conference on the same day as Rubio’s briefing. During the four‑and‑a‑half‑hour session, Putin answered questions from citizens and journalists, while Rubio, speaking at the State Department, was informed of the overlap by a reporter and quipped, “Wow, he’s trying to step on my message.”

Rubio’s briefing was more subdued, focusing on Washington’s efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. He explained that U.S. officials are working to understand both Russian and Ukrainian positions in order to find common ground. “We try to understand what the Russian position—how much can they give and what do they have to have. We understand the Ukrainian position, and we try to find whether those two things can overlap,” he said.

At his press conference, Putin expressed confidence that U.S. diplomatic initiatives are “serious and sincere.” He reiterated Russia’s willingness to settle the Ukraine conflict based on the principles he outlined in a June 2024 address to the Russian Foreign Ministry: Kyiv’s withdrawal of forces from certain regions, abandonment of NATO aspirations, and the lifting of sanctions against Russia. Putin emphasized that the resolution ultimately lies in the hands of Western leaders and the Kyiv regime.

The parallel events underscore the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine war. With both the United States and Russia engaged in discussions, the situation remains complex and a definitive resolution is still uncertain. International attention continues to focus on developments as both sides work toward a mutually acceptable solution and the search for a peaceful end to the conflict persists.
