In Goma, Kivu Fashion Week celebrates solidarity, hope and resilience

The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo recently hosted the fourth edition of Kivu Fashion Week at Goma’s prestigious Serena Hotel. The event showcased a diverse range of clothing, from formal evening gowns to modern twists on traditional garments. Founded in 2022, Kivu Fashion Week has quickly become a landmark cultural event, promoting solidarity, hope, and resilience amid ongoing violence in the region.

Eastern Congo has been plagued by conflict for decades, with its mineral‑rich lands a particular hotspot. In January, Rwanda‑backed M23 rebels seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. Despite this turmoil, the organizers chose to proceed with the fashion week, viewing it as an opportunity to unite communities and convey a message of peace. Voyance Batinda, founder of Kivu Fashion Week, said the event aims to foster international cohabitation and bring people together.

The runway attracted guests from across the eastern DRC as well as Rwanda, Uganda and other countries. Designer Vainqueur Akilimali emphasized that the show helps reunite those scarred by war, promoting resilience, hope and solidarity. Congolese singer Dety Darba, who attended, highlighted the chance to showcase the region’s positive aspects beyond the negative headlines.

Nevertheless, violence continues to rage in eastern Congo. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in South Kivu since a peace agreement between the Congolese and Rwandan presidents was signed in Washington earlier this month. While the accord aims to end the conflict, its effectiveness remains uncertain, and thousands have fled to neighboring Burundi, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

As the situation evolves, events like Kivu Fashion Week serve as a reminder of the importance of promoting peace, hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The fashion week has become a significant cultural phenomenon, showcasing the creativity and determination of the people of eastern Congo.
