Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its GLP‑1 anti‑obesity drug Wegovy in pill form for weight‑loss treatment. The approval allows doctors to prescribe the medication to adults with obesity or to those who are overweight and have at least one weight‑related comorbidity, such as a heart condition. While the FDA had previously cleared a Wegovy pill for diabetes, this new authorization expands its use to weight loss.
According to Novo Nordisk, the Wegovy pill offers a convenient, once‑daily option that can help patients lose as much weight as the original injectable formulation. Company president and CEO Mike Doustdar said the approval provides patients with a new treatment option capable of delivering significant weight loss.
The U.S. Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN), a nonprofit advocacy group, welcomed the development, noting that it creates an important opportunity for people living with obesity. OCAN highlighted that the pill offers an alternative for those hesitant to start injectable therapy and may present a potentially lower‑cost option.
Obesity remains a major health concern in the United States, affecting an estimated 40 % of American adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The latest generation of appetite‑suppressing drugs, including GLP‑1 agonists such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, has gained popularity for its effectiveness in promoting weight loss. Recently, President Donald Trump announced deals with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to lower the prices of some weight‑loss drugs in exchange for tariff certainty. Although the exact price of the Wegovy pill has not been disclosed, the company plans to launch it in the U.S. in January.
This approval is part of a broader effort to combat the growing obesity epidemic and improve access to effective treatments. As the pharmaceutical industry continues to develop new therapies, regulatory clearances like this play a crucial role in bringing them to market. With the Wegovy pill now approved, healthcare providers and patients have another option to consider in the fight against obesity.
