FG vows Ogoni clean-up remains top priority

The Nigerian Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to the Ogoni clean‑up, describing it as a top priority. He made the statement during a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, where a presidential delegation led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu was received. The delegation also included Minister of Works David Umahi and senior officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

Lawal highlighted progress on projects recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), such as mangrove restoration, healthcare services, human‑capacity building, and women‑empowerment programs. These initiatives aim to mitigate the environmental and social impacts of oil pollution in the Ogoni region, following UNEP’s assessment and remediation guidelines.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari echoed the company’s dedication to the ongoing Ogoni dialogue, noting a shift in focus from oil exploration to improving the lives of the local population. This development occurs as the federal government engages with the Ogoni people to resume oil exploration, which has been suspended for more than 30 years. However, some rights groups and community members oppose the resumption, citing lingering pollution concerns.

The Ogoni region has long suffered severe environmental challenges from oil spills and pollution, devastating the local ecosystem and communities. The government’s efforts to prioritize the clean‑up are crucial steps toward mitigating these impacts. As the plans move forward, the initiatives will be closely monitored by rights groups and community members, whose scrutiny will be essential to ensure that their concerns are addressed. The success of the program will depend on the government’s ability to balance the needs of the local population with the country’s broader economic interests.
