Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Dr. Umar Ardo, has downplayed the impact of recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the party’s prospects in northern Nigeria. In an interview with TRUST TV, Ardo argued that no governor can guarantee victory for the APC in the region, contrary to the common belief that governors can deliver their states to the party.

Ardo, who hails from northern Nigeria, emphasized that voters in the North are independent‑minded and base their choices on personal conviction rather than the party affiliation of their governors. He noted that history shows political power in the North does not automatically shift with elected officials, and that the APC’s reliance on governors and defections as a winning strategy may not yield the desired results.

The former PDP aspirant warned that focusing on elite politics while ignoring the needs and concerns of ordinary people could backfire for the APC, especially in future presidential contests. He stressed that the party’s success in the region will depend on its ability to connect with grassroots voters and address their concerns, rather than relying on the influence of governors.

Ardo’s comments come amid a wave of defections to the APC, with several high‑profile politicians, including governors, joining the party in recent months. However, his assessment suggests that these defections may not necessarily translate into electoral success for the APC in northern Nigeria. As the party seeks to consolidate its power in the region, it will need a strategy that resonates with ordinary voters and addresses their needs, rather than depending solely on governors and party elites.

The APC’s performance in northern Nigeria will be closely watched in the lead‑up to future elections. With a large and diverse electorate, the North remains a crucial battleground for any party aiming to win national elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the APC will adapt its strategy to win over voters in the region.
