China has urged Ukraine to reverse its decision to impose new sanctions on Chinese individuals and entities allegedly supporting Russia’s defense industry. The call came after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced plans to introduce several new sanctions packages by the end of the year, targeting Russian entities and foreign nationals, including those from China, involved in supporting Moscow’s military-industrial complex.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, Beijing opposes unilateral sanctions that violate international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council. Jian emphasized that China will “resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens.” This development comes after Ukraine imposed sanctions on a Chinese firm in May as part of broader measures targeting individuals and companies linked to Russia’s defense industry.
The European Union and the United States have also imposed sanctions on Chinese firms and individuals accused of supplying Russia with dual-use goods, components, or materials used in weapons production. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has consistently maintained that China has never provided lethal arms to either side in the conflict and strictly controls exports of dual-use items. Beijing has also expressed support for a ceasefire, an end to hostilities, and the promotion of peace talks.
The relationship between Moscow and Beijing has deepened since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, with the two countries describing their ties as a strategic partnership “without limits.” Bilateral trade has exceeded $200 billion for a third consecutive year, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has described relations with China as stable and trusting.
The imposition of new sanctions by Ukraine is likely to further strain relations between Kiev and Beijing, which have already been tense due to China’s close ties with Russia. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the international community is watching the developments closely, with many countries calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The situation highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with multiple countries navigating their relationships with Russia and China amidst the ongoing conflict.
