Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of Nigeria’s Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, urged restraint over claims that the country’s tax laws have been altered. Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, he asked Nigerians to allow lawmakers to finish their investigation before drawing conclusions.
The National Assembly is currently probing alleged changes to sections of the tax legislation. Oyedele emphasized that the Assembly is best placed to determine whether any alterations were made and, if so, whether they are substantial. The controversy has sparked speculation and public debate, with various claims circulating on social media and other platforms. However, Oyedele cautioned against discussing documents whose origins remain unclear, noting that many of the circulating claims cannot be properly traced.
He stressed the importance of waiting for the investigation to establish what actually happened rather than speculating on unverified information. Regarding allegations that tax officials have been granted new powers to arrest citizens through law‑enforcement agencies, Oyedele clarified that such powers are not new; they already exist under current law. The tax authority can investigate and may call on police assistance when needed.
Oyedele called for calm and restraint, stating that it is essential to wait for the investigation’s conclusion before making any decisions or drawing conclusions. The inquiry into the alleged tax‑law alterations is ongoing, and the National Assembly is expected to provide an update on its findings in due course. His appeal aims to prevent misinformation and speculation as the outcome will have significant implications for Nigeria’s tax system and the broader economic landscape.
