Senator Allwell Onyesoh, who represents Rivers East Senatorial District, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced his defection during a Senate plenary session, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read his letter. Onyesoh said the decision stems from the PDP’s deep‑seated impunity and erosion of its founding principles, and from his commitment to serve his constituents and deliver the benefits of democracy.
In his statement, Onyesoh expressed disappointment with the PDP’s current state, accusing it of being compromised by personal interests and a disregard for internal party rules. He likened his situation to a river navigating obstacles, insisting he must find alternative routes to continue providing democratic dividends to his people. According to him, the party has strayed from its original vision and values, with some leaders prioritising personal ambitions over the party’s well‑being. He also rejected claims of internal peace within the PDP, describing the calm as “the peace of the graveyard,” which he said could breed instability and anarchy.
The APC welcomed Onyesoh’s arrival, with party leaders receiving him at the National Assembly. His defection, together with that of Senator Barinada Mpigi, has increased the APC’s numerical strength in the Senate and reflects ongoing political realignments in Rivers State and nationally. Lawmakers have congratulated him, noting that his experience and legislative capacity are expected to enhance debates and oversight in the Senate.
As a new member of the APC, Onyesoh pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to continue delivering democratic benefits to his constituents. His move has sparked reactions across party lines, with many expressing confidence that he will make a positive impact in his new party.
