The Borno State Police Command has stepped up security operations in Maiduguri and other key areas ahead of Christmas celebrations after a bomb exploded at the Al‑Adum Mosque in Gamboru Market, killing five people and injuring 35. The blast occurred on Wednesday during evening prayers. According to ASP Nahum Daso, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, the incident prompted an expansion of existing security measures to prevent further attacks and reassure residents during the festive period.
Security personnel have been deployed to churches, recreational centres and other strategic locations where large gatherings are expected. The operation is a joint effort between the police and other security and emergency‑response agencies, with officers positioned at major roads, flashpoints and public facilities across Maiduguri. More than 1,000 police officers have been deployed within the metropolis to ensure public safety.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and maintain a high level of vigilance. The police spokesperson emphasized the importance of promptly reporting suspicious movements or individuals and advised the public to use designated emergency‑response numbers. Enhanced screening measures have been introduced at places of worship, with worshippers undergoing security checks before entering churches and mosques.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric and inhumane act” that desecrated a place of worship. He expressed grief over the loss of lives and called for heightened vigilance, especially at religious centres during the festive season. The incident has highlighted the need for increased security measures in the region, particularly during the Christmas period. The intensified operations aim to prevent further breaches and ensure public safety, providing residents with a more secure environment throughout the festivities.
