Sudan has received a significant shipment of humanitarian aid from Italy, marking the start of a series of deliveries aimed at supporting vulnerable populations across the country. The 25‑ton consignment arrived at Port Sudan Airport and includes essential food supplies. It was received by Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), led by Commissioner Salwa Adam Benya.
The arrival ceremony was attended by Italian Ambassador Michele Tomasi, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and members of the National Humanitarian Emergency Committee. Commissioner Benya thanked the Italian government and people, emphasizing that the aid will be distributed to the most vulnerable and displaced communities in coordination with partners.
The shipment is part of the “Italy for Sudan” initiative launched by Ambassador Tomasi, which seeks to assist 2,500 schoolchildren in the Port Sudan area. The initiative also plans to deliver additional aid by sea to support up to 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) across Sudan over the coming year. Ambassador Tomasi highlighted Italy’s long‑standing commitment to Sudan through humanitarian and development support, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing the country’s humanitarian needs.
Sudan faces significant challenges, with over 3 million internally displaced persons and many more affected by conflict, poverty, and food insecurity. The international community has been working to provide support, and Italy is one of the key donors. The “Italy for Sudan” initiative represents a substantial contribution to these efforts, demonstrating Italy’s commitment to helping the Sudanese people during a time of great need.
As the situation in Sudan continues to evolve, the international community will watch closely how the aid is distributed and its impact on the ground. With further deliveries planned, the initiative has the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of vulnerable individuals across the country.
