Court confirms Abiya as acting NNPP chairman in Kano

A Kano State High Court has validated the appointment of Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as the Acting State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State. The ruling also upheld the suspension of former State Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa and barred him from interfering in the party’s affairs until the main case is decided.

The legal challenge originated when the party’s state executive suspended Dungurawa, after which he continued to claim the chairmanship. In response, the NNPP Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee filed a suit against him, with a hearing set for 19 January. The court ordered all parties to maintain the status quo, directing Dungurawa to stop presenting himself as chairman or taking any action that could disrupt the party’s activities in Kano State.

The Kano State Executive Committee of the NNPP confirmed Abiya’s appointment as Acting State Chairman during an emergency meeting at the party secretariat. This decision followed Dungurawa’s removal from office, reportedly due to internal party conflicts. Notably, Dungurawa is aligned with the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The court’s ruling has significant implications for the party’s operations in Kano State as it seeks to resolve the leadership dispute. The NNPP is a major political party in Nigeria, and its Kano State chapter plays a crucial role in the party’s national structure. The ongoing case highlights internal power struggles that may affect the party’s performance in future elections.

As the case progresses, the court’s decision will be closely watched by party members and political observers. The internal conflicts within the NNPP could have broader implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, especially in the lead‑up to upcoming elections. With the hearing scheduled for 19 January, the parties involved must adhere to the court’s directives and await the suit’s outcome, which will be essential in determining the party’s leadership and direction in Kano State.
