Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The state’s APC chairman, Rufus Bature, presented Mutfwang with his new party membership card on Friday in Jos. Prior to this move, the governor was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party he thanked for providing the platform that launched his political career.
Mutfwang said his decision to join the APC is driven by the interests of Plateau State. He assured residents that, despite the change in party affiliation, his administration will continue to adopt an all‑inclusive approach. He called on the people of the state to unite and work together, describing his defection as a “journey of faith” that will yield positive outcomes. Addressing skeptics, he urged patience, promising that time will reveal the benefits of his decision, and extended an olive branch to those who may be apprehensive, encouraging them to relax and cooperate with his government.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of Plateau State and pledged to back the president’s re‑election bid in 2027. He believes that his new affiliation with the APC will enable him to deliver qualitative leadership to the state.
Mutfwang’s defection is significant in the evolving Nigerian political landscape, joining a wave of high‑profile politicians who have recently moved to the APC. The shift is expected to have far‑reaching implications for the political dynamics of Plateau State and the broader national scene, especially as the state prepares for future elections. Nonetheless, the governor reiterated his commitment to work tirelessly for the benefit of the people of Plateau State, regardless of party affiliations.
