New tax law could ignite job loss, destroy small businesses -- Group warns

The Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS) has called on the National Assembly to review the new tax law, warning that its stringent provisions could worsen economic hardship for Nigerians. The appeal follows President Bola Tinubu’s affirmation that the law will be implemented as planned. CEHRAWS Executive Director Chuka Peter Okoye cautioned that, without revision, the legislation could trigger widespread job losses and the collapse of small businesses.

The organization, which promotes good governance and economic fairness, disputes the government’s claim that the new tax measures will benefit low‑income earners and vulnerable individuals. CEHRAWS argues that the law is likely to increase the financial burden on households and small enterprises, especially those lacking adequate safeguards. It stresses that taxation should foster equity rather than widen the gap between rich and poor.

Okoye emphasized that meaningful reform requires citizen engagement, stronger accountability, and alignment of revenue policies with economic realities. He warned that poorly designed fiscal measures could erode public confidence and undermine social cohesion. Beyond taxation, CEHRAWS urged renewed focus on the rule of law, accountable policing, and the protection of livelihoods at all levels of government.

The implementation of the new tax law has heightened concerns among Nigerians already facing rising living costs and job insecurity. Critics from various sectors argue that the law could have far‑reaching consequences for the country’s economy and social stability. As the National Assembly deliberates a possible review, it must prioritize the needs and concerns of citizens, ensuring that any fiscal measures promote economic growth, reduce inequality, and protect the most vulnerable. The outcome of this review will be closely watched for its significant implications for Nigeria’s economic and social development.
