The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met on Monday with the state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The gathering brought together Wike, PDP chairman Chukwuemeka Aaron, and APC chief Tony Okocha, and, according to Wike’s media aide Lere Olayinka, took place on Monday morning.
The meeting follows the collapse of the Tanimu Turaki‑led PDP leadership in Rivers State, which has been subsumed into the Aaron‑led faction that pledged allegiance to Wike. This realignment was announced on Friday during Wike’s visit to Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. Wike has been touring all 23 local government areas of the state in an effort to recapture its political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The encounter between Wike and the two party chairmen may be seen as a significant step in the minister’s bid to strengthen his political influence in Rivers State. As the 2027 polls approach, political leaders across Nigeria are engaging in strategic maneuvers to position themselves for the elections. Wike’s drive to consolidate his party’s structure reflects this broader trend, while the shift from Turaki’s PDP leadership to Aaron’s faction marks a notable change in the state’s political landscape.
The realignment could affect the balance of power in Rivers State as the election draws near. Observers will watch closely how Wike’s ongoing state tour and his engagement with both major parties influence regional dynamics. Political alliances and realignments are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 elections.
