PDP’s Failures Spark Defections to APC in Nigeria

Former Nigerian Representative Dachung Bagos has cited the failures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the reason for his recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Bagos explained that his decision, along with other politicians, was driven by the desire for a platform that can effectively address the needs of their constituents.

Bagos, who represented the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in Plateau State from 2019 to 2023, officially joined the APC on January 4, 2026, alongside other key figures loyal to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang. This move followed Governor Mutfwang’s own defection to the APC, citing the PDP’s internal crises and need for clearer direction.

Rejecting suggestions that the defections were motivated by personal ambition or sycophancy, Bagos emphasized that the PDP’s failure to provide effective leadership and direction was the primary factor. He stated that the APC’s agenda aligns with the aspirations of the people of Plateau State, particularly in areas such as state police and local government autonomy.

Bagos highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s focus on these key governance issues, noting that the APC’s commitment to addressing these concerns was a major factor in his decision to join the party. He also emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for ordinary citizens and engaging young people in politics, stating that the APC’s vision for governance goes beyond party lines and prioritizes the needs of the people.

The recent wave of defections from the PDP to the APC and other parties has significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country navigates ongoing challenges and looks to the future, the alignment of politicians with parties that share their vision and values is likely to continue. Bagos’ defection, along with others, underscores the need for effective leadership and governance that prioritizes the needs of citizens, and it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the country’s development and progress.
