Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered the nation’s security agencies to locate and apprehend those responsible for the recent terrorist attack in Niger State, which killed at least 42 people and abducted several others. The assault took place in the Borgu and Agwara local government areas, where militants raided communities, burned houses and markets, and stole valuable items. Tinubu condemned the attack as a cruel and nefarious act that has tested Nigeria’s resolve, and he instructed the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the service chiefs, the Inspector‑General of Police, and the Director‑General of the Department of State Services to rescue all abducted victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Niger State government also responded, with Governor Umaru Bago calling the incident disturbing and worrying. He expressed sympathy for the affected communities, prayed for the souls of the deceased, and offered condolences to the victims’ families. The Northern States Governors’ Forum similarly condemned the attack, describing it as a brutal assault on innocent citizens and a serious threat to peace and livelihoods.
Senator Mohammed Musa, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, urged President Tinubu to declare an all‑out war against the terrorists, calling for the full invasion, dismantling, and destruction of terrorist networks, camps, and supply chains. He labeled the attacks barbaric and inhumane and extended his condolences to the victims’ families and to the government and people of Niger State.
In related developments, troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army neutralized three suspected bandits and arrested their logistics suppliers in Kogi State, foiling the movement of bandits and recovering arms and ammunition. Former Attorney‑General of the Federation, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, appealed to the United States to launch airstrikes in Benue State to eliminate terrorists, citing the growing terrorist presence there.
The attack in Niger State has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for decisive action against the perpetrators. The Nigerian government has pledged to do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure the safety of its citizens, highlighting the need for stronger security measures, especially in the northern regions where terrorist activity has been on the rise.
