The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has reaffirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the party’s leader in the state, citing the party’s constitution. Emeka Bekee, the state APC chairman, made this assertion on Arise Television’s Morning Show amid ongoing political tensions involving Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
Bekee explained that the party’s constitution clearly states that a sitting governor who joins the APC automatically becomes the party’s leader in that state, and that this position is not subject to debate. Since Governor Fubara has joined the APC, he is now the party’s number‑one member in Rivers State. The APC’s leadership structure follows a clear hierarchy: President Bola Tinubu leads the party at the national level, while governors who are party members lead the APC in their respective states.
Bekee noted that if Minister Wike were to join the APC, he would become a leader in his own capacity as a member, but he currently remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His statement comes amid reports of Wike’s involvement in the nomination of local‑government chairmen in Rivers State, many of whom are not APC members. Bekee downplayed the significance of Wike’s actions, suggesting that the minister may simply be thanking those he worked with to produce the local‑government chairmen.
The Rivers State APC chairman maintained that Governor Fubara’s position as party leader is uncontested, emphasizing that the governor’s membership in the APC makes him the party’s leader in the state according to the party’s constitution. This clarification underscores the party’s structure and hierarchy, with the governor playing a key role in leading the APC in Rivers State.
