A devastating fire broke out at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on December 24, 2025, causing loss of life and property. Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, expressed condolences to the victims’ families, especially the Omatu family, which lost three brothers in the tragedy. The brothers—Mr. Steve Onyeka Omatu, 40; Mr. Casmir Nnabuike Omatu, 39; and Mr. Collins Kenechukwu Omatu, 37—were Anambra‑born businessmen who operated in the affected facility and hailed from the Uzoakwa Community in Ihiala Local Government Area.
Governor Soludo’s press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, released a statement quoting the governor as commiserating with the families and describing the incident as “catastrophic,” turning a joyous Christmas Eve into a night of tragedy. Soludo lamented the loss of the three young men, who were striving to earn an honest living for their families, and noted that their deaths represent not only a family tragedy but also a collective loss to Anambra State. He prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace and wished the affected families strength to bear and recover from their losses.
The governor called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and urged relevant authorities to implement measures that will prevent similar incidents in the future. He commended the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, and other emergency responders for their tireless efforts to rescue victims and contain the situation.
Governor Soludo emphasized that the incident underscores the importance of prioritizing human life and personal safety during fire outbreaks. He advised Anambra citizens residing in Lagos and elsewhere to always put safety first when responding to emergencies, stressing the need for vigilance and prompt action to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
