Burkina Faso authorities say new coup plot foiled, arrests underway

Authorities in Burkina Faso have foiled a new coup attempt amid escalating political tensions in the West African nation. The alleged plot was uncovered on Saturday, January 3, before it could be executed, according to official sources. A pro‑government web television outlet first reported the information, citing security officials; the report was later confirmed by government authorities. The situation is now under control, though security forces remain on high alert.

In a televised address, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, explained that the plan involved a coordinated effort to destabilize the country through targeted assassinations of both civilian and military leaders. The plot was scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. and would have targeted the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, either at close range or by mining his residence. Sana said investigations are ongoing and arrests have already been made. He warned that all those implicated will face prosecution and the full force of the law, and he praised the country’s intelligence services for preventing another attempt to destabilize Burkina Faso.

The alleged scheme is the latest in a series of attempts to remove Captain Traoré, who seized power in 2022 after overthrowing Lieutenant Colonel Paul‑Henri Damiba. Since that takeover, Burkina Faso has experienced persistent political uncertainty, repeated reports of coup attempts, and ongoing security challenges. This foiled plot underscores the complex security landscape, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among security forces to maintain order and stability.

As the investigation unfolds, the government’s ability to address these challenges and prevent future attempts to destabilize the country will be closely watched. The international community is likely monitoring the situation, given its potential implications for regional stability and security.
