Putin celebrates Christmas with Russian veterans and families

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended an Orthodox Christmas Eve service in the Moscow region on Tuesday, where he was joined by veterans of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and their families. During the service, Putin addressed the children present, highlighting the role of Russian warriors in defending the country. He stated that Russian warriors have historically been regarded as carrying out a holy mission to protect the nation and its people.

The Russian Orthodox Church, the world’s largest Orthodox denomination, follows the Julian calendar, which celebrates Christmas on January 7. The church held a service on the night of January 6, marking the eve of Christmas. This calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar used by Catholic and Protestant churches, which celebrates Christmas on December 25.

Putin’s attendance at the service comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian and economic impacts on both countries. The Russian Orthodox Church has played a significant role in promoting national unity and providing support to those affected by the conflict.

The Orthodox Christmas celebration is an important tradition in Russia, with many citizens attending church services and spending time with family and friends. The holiday is also marked by various cultural and charitable events across the country. As the Russian Orthodox Church continues to play a prominent role in Russian society, its traditions and celebrations remain an essential part of the country’s cultural heritage.

The international community continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine, with diplomatic efforts underway to resolve the conflict. As the region navigates this challenging period, the role of religious institutions like the Russian Orthodox Church in promoting peace and unity remains crucial. With the Christmas celebration serving as a symbol of hope and renewal, it is likely that the international community will continue to watch the developments in the region with great interest.
