INEC Guarantees Peaceful Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that the upcoming governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 8, 2026, will be conducted peacefully and without violence. This assurance was given by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, during the INEC annual New Year prayer for 2026 held at the commission’s state office in Osogbo.

As INEC prepares for the election, Dr. Agboke cautioned against spreading narratives that suggest the poll will be marred by unrest. He emphasized that extensive preparations are being made to ensure a smooth electoral process. Addressing staff of the commission, he warned against any form of misconduct and urged them to carry out their duties in accordance with the law.

The REC also reminded staff of the commission’s mandate and cautioned them against allowing themselves to be used to disrupt the electoral process. He stated that those who attempt to compromise the process will face consequences. Additionally, Dr. Agboke disclosed that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise has been improved to detect cases of double registration, aiming to strengthen the credibility of the process.

Dr. Agboke commended the staff of INEC in Osun State for their performance, acknowledging that the commission’s success relies on their cooperation and commitment. He urged them to support the commission in ensuring the success of the electoral process. The REC also stated that INEC Osun conducted its duties professionally during the period of political party primaries in the state.

In a separate meeting with Electoral Officers (EOs), Dr. Agboke emphasized the importance of their role in the success of INEC’s activities. He charged them to closely monitor their staff and logistics, stressing the need for discipline and professionalism. With national attention focused on Osun State following the Ekiti governorship election, Dr. Agboke urged the EOs to take charge of their offices and ensure a peaceful poll.

The assurance of a peaceful election comes as INEC sets in motion the machinery for the governorship election. The commission’s commitment to a credible and violence-free process is crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. As the election approaches, INEC’s preparations and assurances aim to alleviate concerns and promote a stable electoral environment in Osun State.
