Jalen Hurts faces criticism after Eagles playoff exit

The Philadelphia Eagles’ bid to defend their Super Bowl title has come to an end, following a 23-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, who had expressed his desire to create a dynasty with the franchise, was unable to lead his team to victory. The Eagles, who won the NFC East this season, will now be looking to regroup and reassess their strategy.

Hurts had sought to draw inspiration from NBA legend Michael Jordan, meeting with him on several occasions during the 2025 season. However, a recent report by the New York Times has raised questions about Hurts’ approach to the game, suggesting that his intense focus and perfectionism may be perceived as aloofness by his teammates.

The Eagles faced several challenges during the regular season, including reports of frustration among teammates with Hurts’ leadership style. Wide receiver A.J. Brown also hinted at a strained relationship with the quarterback. Following the wild-card loss, the team announced that offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo would be leaving his position, and there is uncertainty about Brown’s future with the team.

In terms of his performance, Hurts completed 294 of 454 passes for 3,224 yards, 25 touchdowns, and six interceptions during the regular season. He also added 421 yards and eight touchdowns on 105 carries, helping the Eagles win the NFC East crown. In the wild-card loss to the 49ers, Hurts went 20 of 35 for 168 yards with one touchdown, and added 14 yards on five carries.

Hurts has been with the Eagles since being drafted in the second round in 2020 and has led the team to two Super Bowl appearances, winning one. The team will now be looking to build on this experience and make adjustments to their strategy in order to make a stronger push for the championship in the future. With the offseason underway, the Eagles will be focused on retooling and preparing for the challenges ahead.
