AFCON Senegal wins title beating Morocco 1-0

Senegal has won its second Africa Cup of Nations title, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in the 2025 AFCON final after extra time. The decisive goal was scored by Pape Gueye in the third minute of extra time, with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box that stunned the home crowd in Rabat.

The match was closely contested, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Morocco had a chance to win in regulation time after being awarded a late penalty, but Edouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz’s effort. The penalty was awarded after a VAR review, highlighting the importance of technology in the tournament.

Prior to the penalty, Senegal had started the match strongly, with Pape Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye forcing Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, to make sharp saves. Morocco responded before half-time, with Nayef Aguerd narrowly missing a dangerous cross from Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.

In the second half, Morocco continued to press for a goal, but Ayoub El Kaabi squandered a clear chance, failing to hit the target from close range. Senegal threatened on the counter, and nearly scored late on, but Bounou produced a fine save to deny substitute Ibrahim Mbaye in the 89th minute.

The match eventually went into extra time, where Pape Gueye’s goal proved to be the winner. Morocco pushed desperately for an equalizer, but Mendy stood firm as Senegal defended resolutely to secure the victory.

This win confirms Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s top football teams, with a second AFCON title won through discipline, resilience, and championship pedigree. The team’s victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and cements their place among the continent’s elite. The 2025 AFCON tournament has showcased the best of African football, with exciting matches and unexpected twists. As the football world looks to the future, Senegal’s win will be remembered as a highlight of the tournament.
