Kano Governor May Defect to APC

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, may consider defecting from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature. Bature explained that the potential move is motivated by the state’s history of not benefiting from being in opposition. He noted that Kano has often found itself in opposition to the federal government, regardless of the ruling party.

Speaking on Channels Television’s LaunchTime Politics, Bature highlighted the state’s past experiences during the administrations of former Presidents Shehu Shagari, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Goodluck Jonathan. He emphasized that Kano’s opposition status did not yield significant benefits for the state. Bature posed a fundamental question: what has Kano gained from being in opposition? He suggested that this question needs to be answered before any decision is made about the governor’s potential defection.

Bature also addressed recent rumors about the governor’s visit to the president, stating that the meeting was primarily focused on development discussions and a briefing on the current state of affairs in Kano. He clarified that the visit was not solely politically motivated. The potential defection of Governor Yusuf to the APC could have significant implications for the political landscape in Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.

The NNPP has been a major player in Kano State politics, and a defection by the governor could impact the party’s influence in the region. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the governor’s decision will affect the state’s relationship with the federal government and the APC. The potential benefits and drawbacks of such a move will likely be closely watched by politicians, analysts, and citizens alike. Ultimately, the governor’s decision will depend on his assessment of what is in the best interest of Kano State and its people.
