APC Challenges Obi, Atiku’s Democratic Credentials

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized Peter Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, questioning their commitment to democracy in Nigeria. In a statement titled “Democracy Without Sacrifice: The Myth of Obi and Atiku”, the party alleged that the duo lacks a history of supporting the country’s pro-democracy movement.

According to the APC, a functioning democracy relies on sacrifice, consistency, respect for institutions, and adherence to the will of the people, rather than selective outrage or politically motivated actions. The party claims that a review of Nigeria’s democratic history reveals that neither Obi nor Atiku played a significant role in the struggle against military rule.

The APC contends that both individuals were absent during a period when activists faced detention, exile, and intimidation while defending democratic ideals. The party stated that they “made no sacrifices, bore no scars and took no risks in defence of democracy” and are now attempting to claim the moral high ground earned by others who fought for democratic principles.

The criticism comes as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of future elections. The APC’s statement highlights the importance of democratic credentials and the role of historical context in evaluating political leaders. By questioning the commitment of Obi and Atiku to democracy, the party is drawing attention to the need for leaders who have demonstrated a long-term dedication to democratic values.

Nigeria has a complex history of military rule and democratic transitions, with various individuals and groups playing important roles in the country’s pro-democracy movement. The APC’s statement is part of a broader debate about the country’s political future and the qualifications of its leaders. As the political process unfolds, the focus on democratic credentials and historical context is likely to remain a key aspect of the discussion.
