The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Delta State has urged passengers to report reckless driving as part of efforts to reduce road accidents. According to the Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander, this strategy is crucial in tackling the menace of road accidents. The call was made during a press briefing on the outcome of the command’s Operation Zero Tolerance special patrol, which took place from December 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026.
During this period, 10 people lost their lives in road accidents, representing a 30% reduction compared to the same period in the previous year, when 15 people died. The command recorded 17 road accidents, a 23% decrease from the previous year, with six fatal accidents, indicating a 17% decrease. The number of persons injured also reduced to 33, marking a significant improvement.
The FRSC intensified its enforcement efforts, resulting in 1,230 arrests for various traffic offenses. Through mobile court sittings, offenders were promptly tried, and four were committed to the Ogwashi-Uku correctional facility for reckless behavior. The sector commander noted that these actions demonstrate the command’s zero-tolerance stance on dangerous driving.
In 2025, the command recorded 143 road accidents, representing a 6.71% increase compared to 2024, while 449 persons sustained injuries, a 32% increase. Despite the increase in traffic volume and road usage, the command’s sustained enforcement, rescue response, and public enlightenment efforts helped maintain the same fatality level. The command has developed additional strategies, including expanding public enlightenment, deepening stakeholder collaboration, and enhancing enforcement and rescue capabilities, to improve driver behavior and reduce accidents.
The sector commander praised the command’s personnel and special marshals for their commitment, sacrifices, and professionalism. She urged road users to obey traffic rules, avoid speeding and dangerous driving, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and exercise patience and tolerance in high-traffic areas. Passengers are advised to speak up against reckless driving, while pedestrians should use designated crossings and remain alert at all times. The FRSC emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility, and collective discipline is necessary to achieve safer roads for all. With sustained commitment and cooperation, the command is confident that safer roads in Delta State are achievable.
