NNPP Condemns Kano Governor’s Betrayal

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed disappointment and warned of consequences after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State defected from the party. Yusuf’s decision to leave the NNPP, citing an irredeemable crisis within the party, was made public on Friday, accompanied by some members of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly.

This development comes shortly after the Kano State Chapter of the NNPP requested Yusuf’s formal resignation prior to his anticipated joining of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor’s move follows a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu. The NNPP has criticized Yusuf’s claim of a crisis within the party, labeling it baseless and an afterthought, given the party’s recent congresses and electoral successes.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, highlighted that the NNPP had successfully held congresses to elect its leadership, from the ward level to the national convention, which took place on December 20, 2025, with Yusuf in attendance. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) supervised these events. Additionally, the party pointed to its participation and victories in two supplementary elections in August 2025 for the Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa constituencies.

The NNPP expressed sadness and disappointment over Yusuf’s resignation, stating that his decision could undermine the progress and hopes of the people of Kano State. The party drew historical parallels, citing the example of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, who left the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in the 1980s and suffered electoral defeat. The NNPP urged the people of Kano State and Nigeria to remain calm and patient, emphasizing that history has shown that those who betray their principles often face public judgment.

The party’s statement serves as a warning to politicians considering defection, highlighting the potential consequences of such actions. The situation is being closely watched, with many awaiting the next steps and the potential impact on the political landscape of Kano State and Nigeria. The NNPP’s response underscores the significance of loyalty and principle in politics, as the party seeks to reassure its supporters and the public of its commitment to its ideals.
