Kano improves prison conditions with new toilets

The Kano State Government has undertaken a significant initiative to enhance the living conditions of inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre. As part of this effort, 15 new toilet facilities have been constructed, and the kitchen has been renovated. This development is aimed at improving the welfare and health conditions of those in custody.

According to a statement released by the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, the project was approved by Governor Abba Yusuf following discussions between the correctional service and relevant stakeholders. The Commissioner for Rural Development, Dr. Abdulkadir Abdussalam, emphasized that the initiative reflects the Governor’s commitment to fulfilling his promise of upgrading living conditions in custodial facilities. He highlighted the importance of access to adequate sanitation and a hygienic kitchen environment in safeguarding the health of inmates and supporting effective correctional administration.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Yusuf Ahmed-Lakpene, commended the state government for its continued support, stating that improved sanitation facilities are crucial for the effective correction, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates into society. He encouraged other stakeholders to follow the state government’s example, emphasizing that a collaborative approach to corrections would contribute to a safer and healthier society.

The event was attended by senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Internal Security and the Director-General of Special Services.
