Kwankwaso’s 2027 Presidential Ambition “Effectively Dead”

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has stated that the 2027 presidential ambitions of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), are unlikely to materialize. Keyamo cited party zoning arrangements, the weakening of NNPP’s political structure in Kano State, and Kwankwaso’s failure to form alliances with major parties as key factors undermining his prospects.

According to Keyamo, Kwankwaso’s decision to reject an earlier offer from the All Progressives Congress (APC) has left him politically isolated. The minister noted that Kwankwaso’s refusal to align with a major party has resulted in his political isolation, as alliances are already being formed ahead of the 2027 general election. Keyamo argued that the NNPP lacks the national presence required to win a presidential election and that its dominance in Kano is eroding due to defections.

The minister also dismissed the possibility of a North-North alliance in 2027, stating that Kwankwaso would not support another Northern presidential candidate as it would hinder his own ambitions. Keyamo noted that Kwankwaso’s options are limited, and that returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), joining the APC, or aligning with the Labour Party would all require him to abandon his 2027 presidential bid.

Keyamo warned that Kwankwaso’s only chance of remaining relevant in national politics is to retain control of Kano in 2027. If he loses Kano, his political influence would be significantly diminished. The minister’s comments suggest that Kwankwaso’s political future hangs in the balance, and his next move may determine whether he remains a significant player in Nigerian politics or fades into obscurity.

The development highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics, where alliances and party affiliations play a crucial role in shaping the country’s political landscape. As the 2027 general election approaches, politicians are maneuvering to position themselves for power, and Kwankwaso’s situation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those seeking to navigate the country’s intricate political terrain.
