The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Lotus Bank have reached a significant milestone in their collaboration to enhance financing for energy access in Nigeria. The two institutions have announced plans to transition from project-based support to a large-scale, dedicated financial framework. This development follows a high-level meeting where they discussed the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) programme.
The DARES programme aims to increase access to energy in underserved and unserved communities across Nigeria. While Lotus Bank has been supporting individual projects under this initiative, the new phase of the partnership will see the bank establish its own dedicated DARES financing facility. This move is expected to provide structured capital to accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions nationwide.
During the meeting, the Managing Director of the REA, Dr Abba Aliyu, emphasized the need for a bold approach, setting a clear global funding target for the facility. The agency also stressed the importance of strong internal standards and a design that prioritizes the ability of developers to scale their operations quickly. This approach is seen as crucial in moving from pilot projects to large-scale impact.
The shift in strategy reflects a growing trend among Nigerian financial institutions, which are increasingly viewing renewable energy as a bankable and commercially viable sector. This change in perception is expected to bridge Nigeria’s energy deficit through sustainable, private-sector-led investment.
Both organizations are working towards signing a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to institutionalize the partnership. The agreement is anticipated to provide the necessary framework for the collaboration, enabling the deployment of clean energy solutions to underserved communities. The REA remains optimistic that this collaboration will serve as a model for other commercial banks, building momentum to address Nigeria’s energy challenges.
The partnership between the REA and Lotus Bank is a significant step towards enhancing energy access in Nigeria. With the country’s growing population and increasing energy demands, this collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the energy gap. As the two institutions move forward with their plans, they are likely to have a positive impact on the country’s energy landscape, promoting sustainable development and economic growth.
