Youth development key to Ogun states economic growth says Governor

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has called on youths to eschew anti-social behavior, emphasizing their crucial role in the state’s economic growth, social transformation, and democratic stability. The governor made this appeal at the formal opening and swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Batch A, Stream 1, held at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu.

Governor Abiodun highlighted his administration’s efforts to invest in youth-focused initiatives, aiming to position Ogun State as a hub for innovation, enterprise, and decent employment. Since taking office, his government has intensified efforts to equip young people with skills relevant to the global digital economy, training over 22,000 youths in areas such as software development, cybersecurity, and digital entrepreneurship within the last 20 months.

The governor also noted significant investments in upgrading sports infrastructure across the state, recognizing the transformative power of sports and creativity. These interventions, he said, demonstrate his administration’s commitment to building a prosperous, inclusive, and innovative Ogun State.

Addressing the NYSC members, Governor Abiodun urged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, loyalty, and patriotism, and to shun anti-social behavior. He encouraged them to be diligent, purposeful, and committed to excellence, emphasizing that Nigeria needs their ideas, energy, and creativity.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, outlined the programs designed to instill values of discipline, patriotism, and selfless service among the corps members. These programs include drills, physical training, and leadership skills development. A total of 3,198 corps members were registered, comprising 1,314 males and 1,884 females. Mrs. Nasamu encouraged them to participate in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, which aims to equip them with relevant vocational skills for self-reliance.

The swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of the NYSC program, which aims to promote national unity, self-reliance, and community development. As the corps members commence their service, they are expected to contribute to the development of Ogun State and Nigeria at large, while acquiring valuable skills and experience that will benefit them in their future endeavors.
