Akintunde, Sports Broadcaster, Dies; Ogun Governor Mourns

Veteran Nigerian Sports Broadcaster Akeem Akintunde Dies at 57

Veteran sports broadcaster and Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), Akeem Akintunde, has died. He was 57. The Ogun State Government confirmed his passing on Thursday, citing a battle with prolonged health complications, including kidney-related ailments.

Akintunde’s death is mourned as a significant loss for Ogun State’s media landscape and the broader Nigerian sports journalism community. He served for years as a prominent voice in sports broadcasting and was a former Chairman of the Ogun State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a statement from Abeokuta, described Akintunde as a distinguished and thoroughbred media professional. “His passage marks the end of a remarkable career built on dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the profession,” the governor said. He highlighted the late broadcaster’s exceptional management skills, warm personality, and high regard among colleagues. The governor extended condolences to Akintunde’s family, friends, and the OGTV community, praying for divine comfort.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, also paid tribute. In a statement signed by Secretary Bunmi Adigun on behalf of Chairman Wale Olarenwaju, Akintunde was hailed as a “walking encyclopedia of sports history.” The union noted his infectious enthusiasm, which transformed every match he covered into a memorable event. “While we have lost a pillar and the silence on the airwaves is profound, we take solace in the incredible legacy he leaves behind,” the statement read. It affirmed that his contributions to the state’s media are indelible and that his wisdom will continue to guide the many protégés he mentored.

Akintunde’s career was defined by his passion for sports and professionalism. His work at OGTV and through SWAN positioned him as a key figure in chronicling and promoting sports in Ogun State. His passing after a lengthy illness closes the chapter on an influential career that inspired colleagues and sports fans alike. The state’s media community now grapples with the absence of a respected veteran whose legacy in sports broadcasting is considered enduring.
