As the world turns its attention to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 13 Nigerian athletes will compete in the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The NCAA indoor championships are scheduled for March 10‑11, 2023, at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This edition marks the first time the indoor championships have been held in New Mexico since 2014.
The Nigerian contingent includes Godson Brume (60 m), Favour Ashe (60 m), Udodi Onwuzurike (200 m), Alaba Akintola (60 m, 200 m), Nathaniel Ezekiel (400 m), Erhire Best (high jump), Favour Ofili (60 m, 200 m), Rosemary Chukwuma (60 m, 200 m), Ezinne Abba (60 m, 200 m), Ella Onojuvwevwo (4 × 400 m relay), Esther Isa (long jump), Onaara Obamuwagun (triple jump) and Grace Anigbata (triple jump).
In his address ahead of the competition, Eddie Nuñez, Director of Athletics at the University of New Mexico, described the championships as a unique opportunity. He emphasized New Mexico’s commitment to ensuring that all attendees have an enjoyable and memorable experience. “Our staff has worked hard to put together a great championship, and we have eagerly looked forward to this event for some time. Please know that all of us are here to ensure you have a good experience in Albuquerque, and we are happy to serve you and answer any questions you may have,” he said.
