Essence International School Founder Dies at 80 MFR

Prominent Nigerian educator and Essence International School founder Dolores Lami Mohammed passed away on February 13, 2026, in her native Philadelphia at age 80. A recipient of Nigeria’s national honor, Member of the Federal Republic (MFR), she spent nearly five decades transforming educational landscapes in Nigeria and internationally through school leadership, curriculum development, and humanitarian initiatives.

Born Dolores Wilson on November 7, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from West Chester University in 1967. After moving to Nigeria in 1970, she dedicated her career to educational advancement. Prior to founding her own institution, she served as Curriculum Supervisor at the Lebanese Community School in Lagos from 1977 to 1982, leading academic planning and development. She also worked as an Educational Consultant in Philadelphia, establishing early childhood programs.

In 1982, Mrs. Mohammed established Essence International School in Kaduna, Nigeria, beginning with a nursery program. Under her direction, the school expanded into a comprehensive pre-kindergarten through secondary institution, eventually serving over 1,000 students with a staff of more than 200. She was recognized for integrating modern teaching methodologies and classroom technology, helping establish the school as one of Kaduna State’s most respected private educational institutions.

Her influence extended beyond campus boundaries through the Open Classroom, the school’s non-profit arm. This initiative launched literacy campaigns, feeding programs, teacher training workshops, and school rehabilitation projects that benefited underserved communities across Nigeria and in Kenya, Lesotho, Niger Republic, Brazil, and the United States.

For her contributions, she received Nigeria’s MFR honor in 2001 and the French government’s Chevalier des Palmes Académiques in 1995, along with commendations from authorities in Niger Republic. Fluent in English, French, Hausa, and Spanish, she maintained her role as Principal of Essence International School even after returning to Philadelphia in 2014, overseeing operations remotely until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, HRH Brig. General Abubakar Garba Mohammed (Rtd.), Emir of Lere. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a brother, and extended family in the United States and Nigeria. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.

Mrs. Mohammed’s legacy endures through the thousands of students educated at Essence International School and the continued outreach of its humanitarian programs, marking her as a pivotal figure in transnational educational development.
